Exploring the Streets of Hermoupolis

We’ll meet in Hermoupolis, where our experienced guide will lead you through narrow streets, small groceries, shops, and traditional stores. You’ll smell the aromas of Syros, meet locals, and experience their daily life. As you stroll, you’ll encounter monuments and neoclassical buildings that tell the story of the island’s impressive history.

Discover a Remarkable Neoclassical Mansion

Next, we’ll visit a stunning Neoclassical mansion. As we step inside, we’ll immerse ourselves in its timeless elegance. The walls, adorned with scenic paintings, and intricate plasterwork on the ceilings evoke the grandeur of the past. Each room tells a story of aristocratic life and offers a glimpse into a bygone era of luxury and refinement.

Miaoulis Square and the Town Hall

Our journey continues to Miaoulis Square, the heart of Hermoupolis. Here, we’ll explore the Town Hall, one of the largest and most impressive in Greece. Key features include the hanging ladder at the entrance, portraits of former mayors, the carriage of Princess Sissy, and fascinating history dating back to 1876. Before leaving the square, we’ll visit the Archaeological Museum of Syros, founded in 1834. The museum’s collection includes sculptures, artifacts, and inscriptions from the early Cycladic and Byzantine periods.

Visit the Historic Apollon Theatre

We’ll then visit the Apollon Theatre, a symbol of Syros’ rich cultural heritage. Built in 1864 by Italian architect Pietro Sampo, it draws inspiration from Italian standards, including the Scala di Milano.

Church of St. Nicholas and Vaporia

Finally, we’ll explore the magnificent Church of St. Nicholas, a Byzantine church dedicated to the patron saint of Hermoupolis. Renowned for its lavish interiors, the church sits in Vaporia, a picturesque area where refugees settled during the revolution. The view of the sea, with the home-boats perched above the rocks, is truly breathtaking.
