Luxury Travel Amorgos Greece: The Island of the Big Blue
Amorgos is a majestic Cycladic island in the heart of the Aegean Sea. Historically, it got its name from the amorgis plant. Locals once used this plant to create fine, traditional tunics. Today, the island offers many paths that connect remote settlements. Indeed, the unique landscape makes it an ideal destination for hiking and 2026 bespoke adventures.
Exploring the Picturesque Ports: Katapola and Aegiali
The town of Amorgos remains one of the most beautiful capitals in the Cyclades. You will find old churches, narrow streets, and traditional cafes at every corner. Specifically, the port of Katapola stretches around a deep, blue bay. Beautiful white houses and local taverns give a special color to this settlement.
Excursion boats regularly depart from the port to take travelers to exotic beaches. For instance, you can visit the crystal waters of Martezi and Plakes. Furthermore, Katapola offers functional nearby beaches and excellent accommodation options in the southwest. While real estate is growing, the proximity to the historic Chora remains a major advantage.
The Magic of Chora and the Hozoviotissa Monastery
Chora sits 7km uphill and offers an exquisite Cycladic experience. You can walk along the marked trail #2, known as “Photodotis,” for a more enjoyable arrival. The village features arched passageways and bulbous church domes. Historically, Venetians fortified the strategic rock plug that dominates the center of the village.
Only 20 minutes beyond Chora lies the island’s top attraction: the Monastery of Hozoviotissa. Emperor Alexios Komnenos established this cliffside masterpiece in 1088. Notably, the monastery clings to the rocks 300m above the Aegean Sea. Three friendly monks live there today and greet pilgrims with traditional loukoumi and raki psimeni. Consequently, the view from the terraces is truly unforgettable.
Spiritual Landmarks and Sacred Waters
The southwest region also hosts the quiet monastery of Agios Georgios Valsamitis. Builders constructed this site over an ancient water-oracle. Historically, people interpreted fortunes based on the behavior of objects in the water. Fortunately, you can still see the sacred water in the narthex today. The monastery also features fine frescoes that reflect the island’s deep religious heritage.
Aegiali: Sunsets and Coastal Serenity
Egiali offers a long beach, great sunsets, and excellent taverns. We highly recommend To Limani tis Kyra Katinas for fresh fish and local wine. If you seek more solitude, follow the trail north to the superior Levrosos beach. Specifically, a rougher path leads to the naturist beach of Hokhlakas for ultimate privacy.
Many hiking walks start from Egiali. Trail #4, “Melania,” offers an easy 2.5-hour loop through Langada and Tholaria. Langada is the capital of the northeast and houses an essential-oil distillery. Moreover, Tholaria is even more atmospheric, featuring cobblestone streets and stone stairways.
Authentic Flavors: Mekila and Rakomelo
Finally, you must try the local Mekila Amorgion. This unique spirit comes from 100% wild prickly pear fruit. Amorgion is the first company in Greece to create the famous rakomelo trend. You can visit their new distillery on the Katapola-Chora road for a guided tour.
