Planning a Shore Excursion in Athens
When Alla Poura and her group reached out to us for their July 2025 stop in Athens, they were clear about one thing: they didn’t want a typical cruise excursion.
Sailing aboard Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas, they had just one day in port—and they wanted to experience as much of Athens as possible, without the rush of large group tours. Our task was to create a shore excursion that felt personal, flexible, and rich in both scenery and story.
From Port to Poseidon
At precisely 12:00 PM, their English-speaking driver Jim met them at the port. With a comfortable vehicle and local insight, the group began their drive along the Athenian Riviera—a stunning stretch of coast dotted with seaside suburbs like Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza.
Their destination? Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon, perched dramatically above the sea. This wasn’t just a photo stop—it was a moment of connection with one of Greece’s most iconic views. The group had time to explore the ancient sanctuary, soak in the panoramic scenery, and enjoy lunch at a traditional seaside taverna.
The Heart of Athens
In the afternoon, their Athens city tour began. From the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympics were held, to landmarks like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Syntagma Square, and Hadrian’s Arch, the route offered a sweeping view of classical and contemporary Athens.
Some guests opted to explore the Acropolis, walking in the footsteps of philosophers and poets. The Parthenon, Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike were more than just historic structures—they were the soul of the city, and the highlight of the tour.
A Museum That Makes It All Make Sense
Before returning to the ship, the group had time for one final stop: the Acropolis Museum. Here, ancient statues and artifacts finally found their perfect home, displayed with modern elegance and clarity. It was the perfect conclusion to a day filled with insight, views, and storytelling.
