Mavrovouni is the most beautiful and longest beach close to Gythio, where the sea turtles Caretta-caretta go to lay their eggs in summer. Fish taverns and beautiful mansions line up the port of Gythio, from where there is a ferry connection to Kythira and Crete. Holidays in Gythio can be combined with visits to Monemvasia, Kythira, Kalamata, Mystras and other regions of Peloponnese.
How to get there?
To reach Gythio from Athens by car, take the National Highway to Corinth, then the highway to Tripoli, and from there, follow the rural road to Sparti and signs to Gythio. The distance is 270 km from Athens and 40 km from Sparta. Alternatively, take a KTEL bus to Sparti, then transfer to another bus to Gythio. Gythio has no airport; the nearest is Kalamata, open in summer with charter flights, or Athens Airport, with year-round flights. From Kalamata, you can reach Gythio by bus (via Sparti) or rental car. The port of Gythio has limited ferry connections, including a service from Kissamos port in Crete, running three times a week year-round.
