Byzantine Experience
Tragea Valley has always been a coveted strategic location, valued by conquerors for its fertile soil, access to fresh water, and natural defenses. The valley’s rich agricultural land, abundant olive groves, and central position on the island made it an ideal site for settlement and trade, which also made it a contested area throughout history.
During the medieval period, Naxos’ Christian faith played a central role in shaping daily life. The island’s religious devotion is evident in its numerous Byzantine churches, many of which are still beautifully preserved and decorated with intricate frescoes. These churches were not only places of worship but also symbols of the island’s resilience, reflecting the spiritual strength of the locals during times of foreign occupation.
On this moderate round walk, you will journey through Naxos’ medieval past. Starting in the charming village of Halki, once the island’s commercial heart, we’ll hike through the lush landscape of Tragea Valley. Along the way, you’ll explore several Byzantine churches, some adorned with remarkable frescoes, and pass through oak forests and scenic gulleys. The trail will lead you to one of the most significant churches in the Cyclades, Panagia Drosiani.
Our journey continues to the village of Moni, offering breathtaking views to the south, before wandering through olive groves, orchards, and dense oak and plane tree forests. From here, we’ll head to the picturesque villages of Kaloxilos and Akadimi, where you can immerse yourself in the island’s rich medieval heritage and stunning natural beauty.
