Discover the authentic flavors and warm hospitality of Crete through this immersive full-day agritourism experience. Visit traditional farms, explore local production methods, and savor fresh, home-cooked food in the serene mountain villages near Chania.
First Stop: Olive Mill Tour & Tasting
We begin our journey in the village of Kontopoula, located in the Keramia region. Our first visit takes us to a family-run olive mill, where you’ll explore the process of olive oil production. While the mill isn’t active outside the harvest season (October to January), a detailed video offers a step-by-step look into how olives are turned into liquid gold.
After the tour, enjoy a guided tasting of different olive oils, paired with a small treat inspired by local flavors. This stop blends tradition, education, and taste in the best possible way.
Second Stop: Sheep Farm Visit & Cheese-Making Experience
Next, we head to the neighboring village of Kampoi—a short 10-minute drive—where the local sheep farm awaits. Here, you’ll dive into the cheese-making process from start to finish.
First, learn about the old-fashioned method of hand-milking sheep. You’ll even get the chance to try it yourself under the farmer’s guidance. Then, watch fresh milk transform into a warm, soft cheese, which you’ll sample right on the spot.
The experience continues with a short tour of the farm, where you’ll discover how the animals are fed and cared for. Before leaving, indulge in a tasting of house-made cheeses, honey, pure olive oil, and a glass of tsikoudia—the local spirit of Crete.
Third Stop: Winery Visit & Tasting
Our next stop is a boutique winery in the same village. During your visit, you’ll explore the different stages of winemaking. A guided tour will show you the equipment, fermentation process, and storage techniques.
If your visit falls in September or October, you might even witness the grape harvest and production in action. Afterward, sit back and enjoy a tasting of the winery’s finest labels, including reds, whites, and sweet liqueurs based on tsikoudia. Some tastings may also feature local renditions of whiskey, rum, vodka, and gin.
Final Stop: Traditional Cretan Meal at a Tavern
We finish our day at a charming mountain tavern. Here, you’ll enjoy a hearty Cretan meal made with local ingredients and seasonal produce. Dishes include appetizers, mains, and desserts that reflect the island’s rich culinary traditions. Local wines and tsikoudia will accompany your meal, of course.
As you relax in this welcoming environment, surrounded by village charm and mountain views, you’ll truly understand what makes Cretan hospitality so unique.
