Crete is far more than a simple island. Indeed, it is a world of its own. As the largest of the Greek islands, it features a landscape that shifts dramatically. You can find sun-drenched pink sand beaches in one area and snow-capped peaks in another. Many travelers enjoy Crete from mountain roads or the deck of a boat. However, a brand-new perspective is now taking flight.
We are proud to add the most exclusive hot air balloon Greece experience to our itineraries. Consequently, you can now rise high above the clouds to witness the raw beauty of the Cretan highlands.
The Gateway to the Clouds: The Lasithi Plateau
The heart of this aerial adventure is the Lasithi Plateau. This high-altitude basin sits in eastern Crete, nearly 850 meters above sea level. Furthermore, this area feels frozen in time. It stays far removed from the busy coastal resorts.
-
A Patchwork of History: From your basket, you will see a green patchwork of fertile fields and almond trees. The plateau is famous for its iconic white-sailed windmills. Farmers traditionally used these to irrigate the land. Therefore, seeing these white dots across the valley at sunrise is truly unforgettable.
-
The Birthplace of Gods: The Dikti Mountains cradle the plateau. While you drift, you will look down upon the slopes that hide the Diktaean Cave. According to Greek mythology, Rhea hid the infant Zeus in this sacred cavern.
-
The Messara Plain: Depending on the wind, some journeys reveal the Messara Plain. This is the largest plain in Crete. As a result, you can see the incredible agricultural richness of the island from above.

The Experience: A Morning of Serenity
This is not merely a flight. Instead, it is a ritual that honors Greek hospitality and the thrill of discovery.
1. The Dawn Call & Inflation
The journey begins in the quiet “Blue Hour” before sunrise. Guests can join the crew for the ritual of inflation. First, the crew prepares the equipment. Then, you watch the massive colorful envelope expand under the roar of the burners. This sight creates a perfect introduction to the morning’s magic.
2. The Sunrise Flight
Next, the balloon gently detaches from the earth. The silence is profound during this time. For 30 to 40 minutes, you will float with the breeze. At peak altitude, the views stretch across the entire island. On clear days, you can even see the Aegean Sea to the north and the Libyan Sea to the south simultaneously.
3. The Traditional Toast & Feast
After a smooth landing, we celebrate in the centuries-old tradition of ballooning. First, we greet you with a sparkling wine toast. Afterward, the experience concludes at a local taverna. Here, you will enjoy a traditional Cretan breakfast. This feast includes fresh local honey, artisanal cheeses, and mountain herbs.

Planning Your Flight
The flights primarily take off from the Lasithi area. We offer transfers from Heraklion, Hersonissos, and Agios Nikolaos for your convenience. Please remember that the plateau is cool at dawn. Therefore, you should bring a light jacket and wear comfortable shoes. Finally, remember that safety is our priority.
