Travel as a Gift
When Dawn O’Brien planned a family vacation for four, including one spirited teenager, she didn’t just want a typical getaway—she envisioned an adventure that blended discovery, culture, and time to reconnect.
Over nine summer days in Greece, the O’Briens journeyed through stone-built villages, castle towns, and sunlit coastlines—exploring places where history lives and memories are made.
Stepping Into a Fairytale: Monemvasia
The journey began in Monemvasia, a hidden medieval gem carved into a rock off the Peloponnesian coast. After being picked up in Neapols Port, the family spent their first day wandering narrow cobbled alleys, climbing winding paths with sweeping sunset views, and walking to the edge of the cliffs at Portelo, where the sea waits just below.
It wasn’t just scenic—it was the kind of place that sparks imagination in young minds and stills the pace of busy parents.
Coastal Wonders & Stone Villages in Mani
The next day led them along the Laconic Gulf, through dramatic seaside villages. Stops in Porto Kagio, Vathia, and Limeni showed them a wilder, more authentic side of Greece. They explored remote beaches, snapped photos by the haunting Dimitrios shipwreck, and soaked in stories from the region’s rebellious history.
Even as they moved, the family took their time—laughing, tasting, exploring. This wasn’t about rushing. It was about experiencing.
Castles or Coastlines? A Day of Choice
When day three arrived, the family faced two great options: dive into the past at the UNESCO site of Mystras, or take it easy on the island of Elafonisos, known for its turquoise waters and quiet beaches.
Their flexibility turned travel into freedom—one of the greatest gifts on a family vacation.
Living History in Nafplion
Next came Nafplion, a coastal town rich with charm and crowned with three castles. The O’Briens explored at their own pace, visiting historic fortresses and swimming in the warm waters of Karathonas Beach just outside town.
But what made this stop extra special was something close to their hearts: a private Greek cooking class. Together, they learned to prepare traditional dishes with a local chef, pairing each course with Greek wines. It was hands-on, delicious, and most of all—fun.
A Taste of Island Life in Hydra
With a short trip to Hydra, they discovered yet another side of Greece. No cars, no rush—just quaint harbors, art shops, and sea-splashed paths perfect for walking as a family.
It was a peaceful pause that brought them closer, letting them connect without distractions.
Wrapping Up in Athens
Before their journey ended, the O’Briens made their way back to Athens, with a stop at Epidaurus or Mycenae for one last look into Greece’s ancient roots. Their final night in the city gave them time to reflect on a trip that had been adventurous, restful, and meaningful all at once.
❤️ Why This Family Vacation Worked
This was more than a travel plan—it was a thoughtfully crafted story. Each location, stop, and experience was chosen with the family’s needs in mind. From energetic sightseeing to quiet island days, from historical insight to hands-on activities, it was a journey that struck the perfect balance.
And most importantly, it was theirs.
