The hiking tour in Patmos that includes the Cave of the Apocalypse, the Monastery of Saint John, and a scenic walk through Chora. Explore sacred landmarks and enjoy breathtaking views.

Explore sacred paths, breathtaking views, and the timeless charm of Chora on foot

Step back in time with a guided hiking tour in Patmos, tracing the paths once walked by monks and pilgrims. This scenic experience follows the old cobblestone trail that connects the port to the island’s most sacred sites, just as it was in the 19th century—before any roads were built.

The first stop is the Cave of the Apocalypse, nestled on the hillside between Skala and Chora. Here, Saint John the Evangelist, exiled in 95 AD, received divine visions that inspired the Book of Revelation. As you enter the cave, you’ll see the place where he rested, the spot where he placed his hand for support, and the large rock said to have split during God’s revelations.

Next, the trail leads you to the Monastery of Saint John, perched high above Chora like a fortress. Founded in 1088 by the monk Christodoulos, this sacred site dominates the skyline with its castle-like architecture and towering stone walls. Inside, admire Byzantine frescoes, pebbled courtyards, and rare artifacts. The monastery’s museum displays ornate chalices, jeweled crosses, and religious paintings—including a work by El Greco. While the library is closed to the public, it remains one of Greece’s best-preserved monastic archives.

After visiting the monastery, enjoy a leisurely walk through Chora, a labyrinth of whitewashed homes, arched passages, and historical mansions dating from the 15th to 18th centuries. At every corner, you’ll discover new panoramic views of Patmos and the Aegean.

Before descending, stop at the iconic Windmills of Patmos, built in 1588 and restored in 2010. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Skala, the northern coastline, and nearby islands—weather permitting.

The tour ends with a return to the port, either on foot or by pre-arranged transportation.
