If you want to explore local traditions beyond Messinian cuisine, visit the Folklore Museum of Kalamata.

Kalamata is where the Greek War of Independence began on 23 March 1821, led by brave heroes.

In this two-story mansion, you’ll see artifacts from the era and learn about life in Messinia before the industrial revolution.

Kalamata also had the first printing press of liberated Greece, where the “Proclamation of the Rebellious Greeks” was printed.

On the same floor, view two simulations: a traditional Greek home and a local coffee shop.

The tour ends with displays of traditional costumes and Byzantine art.
