Nikopolis, founded in 29 BC by Octavian, commemorates his victory over Marc Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium. The Monument of Zalongo sits near the archaeological site of Kassopi, where in 1803, 63 women and children from Souli villages danced off a cliff to avoid capture by Ali Pasha’s soldiers. The Acheron Strait and Estuary is one of 18 recognized natural landmarks in the region. Here, the famous Nekromanteion, or Oracle of the Dead, stands near the Acherousian Lake. Homer mentions the Nekromanteion in the Odyssey, where Circe directs Ulysses to consult the blind seer Teiresias in the underworld for guidance.
