Αfter Mount Agios Oros it is the next most important monastic place in Greece. Religious tourism is very popular in this area, numerous travelers arrive every year to visit the 6 stunning monasteries on the tops of the rock formations. The traditional monasteries are not the only reason why tourists flock to this place. Many travelers also visit it to hike or rock-climb, two of the most popular things to do there. Next to Meteora lies Kalambaka, a lovely town, which you can use as a base of your exploration, you’ll find many hotels, restaurants, shops and facilities.

How to get there?

To visit Meteora, start by reaching Kalambaka. From Athens, take the KTEL bus from Liosion station, or drive via the National Road (Athina – Livadia – Lamia). Alternatively, trains to Kalambaka are available from Athens, Thessaloniki, and other mainland cities. From Kalambaka, you can reach Meteora by car or taxi. There is no airport in Meteora; the nearest is Nea Anchialos Airport in Volos (summer-only, low-cost flights). For year-round flights, fly to Athens or Thessaloniki airports. Guided tours to Meteora are available from Athens, Thessaloniki, and Halkidiki.
