Discover Patmos on a guided tour to the Cave of the Apocalypse and the Monastery of St. John. Explore iconic religious landmarks, rich history, and spiritual heritage.
Uncover the spiritual soul of Patmos on this unforgettable cultural and religious tour. Visit the sacred Cave of the Apocalypse, where Saint John the Theologian lived during his exile in 95 AD. According to tradition, this is the very grotto where he received the divine visions that inspired the Book of Revelation. Inside the cave, you’ll see the crevice in the rock—said to have split when God spoke—as well as the stone bed where the Evangelist rested and the handhold he used to stand.
Next, continue to the awe-inspiring Monastery of Saint John, a landmark that dominates the island’s skyline. Built in 1088 by the monk Christodoulos, this fortress-like monastery rises above Chora with towering stone walls and Byzantine battlements. Walk through its pebble-covered courtyard and admire the elegant arcades and vibrant frescoes of the Cretan School of iconography. Step into the monastery museum, which showcases a rare collection of sacred artifacts including gold-embroidered vestments, jeweled chalices, Byzantine icons, and an original painting by El Greco.
Although the monastery’s library is not open to the public, it remains one of the most significant monastic archives in Greece. This tour offers a deep connection to the island’s Orthodox heritage and the unique spiritual energy that draws pilgrims and travelers from around the world.
