Arachova is a mountainous village nestling picturesquely at the foot of Mt. Parnassos in Viotia, Southern Greece. It is the most cosmopolitan winter destination in Greece, a great favourite for passionate ski lovers and celebrities, or just first-time visitors who wish to relax in a dreamy mountainous setting with modern tourism facilities. Its modern ski resort, its close proximity to Athens, and its breathtaking mountainous landscape are the strongest reason why. Apart from the mountain activities, Arachova is also famous for its bustling nightlife and as the favorite mountain resort of Athenians. It is located 35 km west of Livadeia.Famous local products: Aráhova offers a memorable gourmet experience; taste local specialties: kontosoúvli (big hunks of pork skewered and put on a rotisserie with onions, tomatoes, peppers and seasoned with salt and pepper, garlic and oregano), kokorétsi (the intestines of the lamb stuffed with offal), sarmades (stuffed grape leaves), traditional pies, handmade trahanas (pasta soup, can be sweet or sour), and hilopites (egg noodles made in linguine-sized strips, cut into small pieces). The region of Arachova is well-known for its textiles, woodwork, dry wines and the local cheese, called “formaela”.It also produces a sweet smelling hard rind cheese of with a relatively mild flavour that you should definitely taste!
The popular resort is not only for those who love winter sports, but also for those who seek contact with nature, good food, excursions with archaeological interest, as well as places that evolve their services without losing their authenticity. Built on the slopes of Parnassos, a breath away from its Ski Center but also from the Parnassos National Park, one of the oldest in Greece, to get to know it better and love it, you have to walk through its secular streets , where you will meet its picturesqueness and tradition.
A typical symbol of Arachova is the imposing Clock and the Bridge. The Clock tower, standing proudly on the Tyria rock, has been at the entrance of the village since the 18th century. It is also known as “the Hour” and is a real jewel of the region. Perhaps it is the most characteristic image that the visitor will see upon entering the city. It has been destroyed twice by an earthquake and by the German occupation. Its current form is due to the abbot of the Saint Loukas Monastery, Nektarios Kamvasinos, who undertook its reconstruction at his own expense.
Arachova is undoubtedly associated with winter sports. As soon as the first snow falls, Parnassos is flooded with people. Nineteen slopes for skiers of all levels, with a total length of 36 km, but also a snowboard park, adventure track, chalets and shops. In the absolute white, the shining world of the best and most organized ski center in Greece highlights Parnassos as a giant attractive magnet for young and old.
But beyond its cosmopolitan life, Arachova also has its unique culinary heritage to show. Roumeliot honey-eating dominates the region. Kokoretsi, kontosouvli, sausage, meats on the spit, on the grill, in soups, rooster, pork and of course its famous cheese, formella, but also the Arachovite wine, black and brusko, are all famous. Cars line up on the main road for the formala and handmade pasta sold by the small shops in the area. The delicious cheese comes directly from producers in Central Greece, traditionally made from sheep’s milk. The cuisine of Arachova is based on flour. Pies, pasta, trachanades, bread but sweets based on flour such as diples, baklavas, milk pies, are just some of the dishes of Arachovite cuisine. In addition, the oil of the area is of top quality as the olive grove of Arachova is mountainous and the olives are cultivated in such a way as to ensure its excellent quality.
